Ella’s Frontier Joseph City, Az

I was in Joseph City last weekend and visited Ella’s Frontier. It is a little place that was part of old Route 66 and is now in ruins. I have driven by it a thousand times and taken pictures of the outside once before, but this time I went inside. It was really amazing. It was nasty and torn apart, but also colorful and really….I don’t know how to explain it. It was quite and felt kind of untouched. There were all things things around from the 70s and it was like we had found a treasure. The weeds had grown into the building, but they were really beautiful because they just twisted and twined along the ground and colorful clothing. See for yourself and maybe you will agree with me.

I almost never shoot in B&W because I love color. I also very rarely go out in the desert and shoot formal landscapes. I broke out of my shell the other day and produced these few images in Joseph City, AZ.

Lots of Trees Behind Bars

These photos are not all really connected right now. I just shot them all on a trip to Tucson the other day. What I do find interesting about a few of them though are the details about the trees. There is a dead tree inside a building and I think its a funny contrast to the living trees and plants through a iron gate.

Anne Lass’s series Geography of Nowhere is amazing. All of the places photographed are in the U.S., but she is from Germany. They are almost light and airy making them so easy to look at for a long time because they are so beautiful. The subject matter in contrast though is very conflictive and shows the viewer places that have no purpose and look forgotten or simply ignored. Below is the statement from Anne Lass about this series.

“The project “Geography of Nowhere” was photographed in the United States, where I resided the past couple of years besides living in Germany. In my work, I try convert my personal impression of parts of the US- American living space into a panopticon of absent self-situatedness. It is the absence of any reference of place and the randomness of shown locations that conducts me to the paradox title Geography of Nowhere. In this geography, the viewer is left to the sense of a misanthropic and cold atmosphere, caused by the dictate of ever repeating functional arrangements in the landscape. Especially in the urban cityscapes, I find the conflict areas that influence my images: conflicts of functionalism and individual development, the association with nature, the concourse of construction and vastness and, last but not least, to human interaction.”

Pathological Picture-Taker

Pathological Picture-taker: someone to shoots numerous pictures even if they have no idea what they will do with them. I have been shooting like crazy for a long time and have been horrible about posting any of them. Today this will change and although these photos I will show today are funny, I think. I love being ironic or humorous in art because its hard. Thats why so much of art is scary or depressing, because its easier.

In the last few days I have also found a burned fire hydrant, a stucco single wide, and a couple funny signs. Stay tuned they will be posted by the end of this weekend.

I spent my morning photo collaging on photoshop because I didn’t feel like going out to take pictures today. It is really relaxing to me, and I was pretty happy with some of the results, but my husband doesn’t like them. Making collages is fun because I can sit in my studio and make art like a painter would. I love it, and I feel like it its in revolt to all those people who say photography is not art. WHAT!?

I really enjoy the photography of Tammy Mercure. I have a hard time finding women photographers who I really like, its horrible. Many of her photographs are funny. I love when any artist uses humor, because its not easy. I tried to include some of her photographs here, but it didn’t work out, so go to her website! She has such a variety of photographs which are really beautiful, but also make you think about tourism and culture. Her series Big Rock Candy Mountain is really interesting, I always love when portraits are mixed with landscapes, but all the other series are just as good.

Metal Cone in Winslow

There is a huge metal cone in Winslow across the street from the prison that I drive by all the time. I have no idea what it is, but I want to pull over and take pictures of it all the time, but its across from the prison. My husband drove with me yesterday so we pulled over for a second, and I took a few photos. Unfortunately, it was a really ugly and stormy day, so the photos are not the best. I will return and take better photos of it soon though.
